Iochpe-Maxion's (BVMF:MYPK3) earnings trajectory could turn positive as the stock soars 12% this past week
Iochpe-Maxion S.A. (BVMF:MYPK3) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 21% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 37% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.
While the last five years has been tough for Iochpe-Maxion shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, Iochpe-Maxion moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.
The most recent dividend was actually lower than it was in the past, so that may have sent the share price lower.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Iochpe-Maxion, it has a TSR of -20% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Iochpe-Maxion shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 7.5% over one year. That's including the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 4% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Iochpe-Maxion (1 is significant) that you should be aware of.
