We Think That There Are Issues Underlying Gradus AD's (BUL:GR6) Earnings
Unsurprisingly, Gradus AD's (BUL:GR6) stock price was strong on the back of its healthy earnings report. However, our analysis suggests that shareholders may be missing some factors that indicate the earnings result was not as good as it looked.

Operating Revenue Or Not?
Companies will classify their revenue streams as either operating revenue or other revenue. Oftentimes, non-operating revenue spikes are not repeated, so it makes sense to be cautious where non-operating revenue has made a very large contribution to total profit. However, we note that when non-operating revenue increases suddenly, it will sometimes generate an unsustainable boost to profit. Notably, Gradus AD had a significant increase in non-operating revenue over the last year. In fact, our data indicates that non-operating revenue increased from лв850.0k to лв32.5m. The high levels of non-operating revenue are problematic because if (and when) they do not repeat, then overall revenue (and profitability) of the firm will fall. In order to better understand a company's profit result, it can sometimes help to consider whether the result would be very different without a sudden increase in non-operating revenue.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
On top of the non-operating revenue spike, we should also consider the лв15m impact of unusual items in the last year, which had the effect of suppressing profit. While deductions due to unusual items are disappointing in the first instance, there is a silver lining. We looked at thousands of listed companies and found that unusual items are very often one-off in nature. And that's hardly a surprise given these line items are considered unusual. Assuming those unusual expenses don't come up again, we'd therefore expect Gradus AD to produce a higher profit next year, all else being equal.
Our Take On Gradus AD's Profit Performance
In the last year Gradus AD's non-operating revenue really gave it a boost, but not in a way that is necessarily going to be sustained. Having said that, it also took a hit from unusual items, which could bode well for next year, assuming the expense was one-off in nature. Having considered these factors, we don't think Gradus AD's statutory profits give an overly harsh view of the business.
