An Insider At Origin Energy Lowered Their Holding Recently

From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in Origin Energy Limited's (ASX:ORG ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Origin Energy

The MD, CEO & Executive Director, Frank Calabria, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$1.9m worth of shares at a price of AU$9.94 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of AU$11.95, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 9.9% of Frank Calabria's holding. Frank Calabria was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Does Origin Energy Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Origin Energy insiders own about AU$40m worth of shares. That equates to 0.2% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
