Duxton Water's Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. The last dividend was quite comfortably covered by Duxton Water's earnings, but it was a bit tighter on the cash flow front. The company is clearly earning enough to pay this type of dividend, but it is definitely focused on returning cash to shareholders, rather than growing the business.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 56.7% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 33%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Duxton Water Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The company has maintained a consistent dividend for a few years now, but we would like to see a longer track record before relying on it. Since 2017, the dividend has gone from AU$0.023 to AU$0.062. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 28% over that duration. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see Duxton Water has been growing its earnings per share at 57% a year over the past three years. The company's earnings per share has grown rapidly in recent years, and it has a good balance between reinvesting and paying dividends to shareholders, so we think that Duxton Water could prove to be a strong dividend payer.
Our Thoughts On Duxton Water's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Duxton Water is earning enough to cover the dividend, we are generally unimpressed with its future prospects. We don't think Duxton Water is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. To that end, Duxton Water has 3 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about. We have also put together a list of global stocks with a solid dividend.
