Here's Why I Think Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals (ASX:CUV) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals (ASX:CUV). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Growing?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Who among us would not applaud Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 53%, compound, over the last three years? Growth that fast may well be fleeting, but like a lotus blooming from a murky pond, it sparks joy for the wary stock pickers.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. While we note Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 20% to AU$38m. That's a real positive.

Are Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at AU$210m. That equates to 14% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Very encouraging.
Is Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals Worth Keeping An Eye On?
Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So to my mind Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Clinuvel Pharmaceuticals (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that you need to be mindful of.
