Generally, when a single insider buys stock, it is usually not a big deal. However, when several insiders are buying, like in the case of Star Minerals Limited (ASX:SMS), it sends a favourable message to the company's shareholders.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Star Minerals
The insider Leslie Ingraham made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$132k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.03 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of AU$0.034. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Insider Ownership
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Star Minerals insiders own 37% of the company, worth about AU$1.5m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
