St Barbara Limited's (ASX:SBM) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 31%
St Barbara Limited (ASX:SBM) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 31% gain and recovering from prior weakness. But the last month did very little to improve the 64% share price decline over the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, St Barbara's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Metals and Mining industry in Australia, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 87.8x and even P/S above 539x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does St Barbara's Recent Performance Look Like?
St Barbara certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like St Barbara's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an explosive gain to the company's top line. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 65% drop in revenue in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenues over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 24% per annum during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 138% growth per annum, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this information, we are not surprised that St Barbara is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
St Barbara's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that St Barbara's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, St Barbara's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
