How Many Lake Resources NL (ASX:LKE) Shares Have Insiders Sold, In The Last Year?
We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Lake Resources NL (ASX:LKE).
What Is Insider Buying?
It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Lake Resources
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the MD & Director, Stephen Promnitz, sold AU$100k worth of shares at a price of AU$0.055 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of AU$0.26, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. It is worth noting that this sale was only 11% of Stephen Promnitz's holding. Stephen Promnitz was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.
Stephen Promnitz divested 4.05m shares over the last 12 months at an average price of AU$0.038. Lake Resources Insiders Are Selling The Stock
The last three months saw some Lake Resources insider selling. MD & Director Stephen Promnitz divested only AU$52k worth of shares in that time. Neither the lack of buying nor the presence of selling is heartening. But the volume sold is so low that it really doesn't bother us.
Does Lake Resources Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Lake Resources insiders own about AU$26m worth of shares. That equates to 10% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Lake Resources Tell Us?
An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company. We're in no rush to buy! While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
