Bullish Dart Mining Insider Buying Worth AU$970.9k Yet To Pay Off
The recent 10.0% drop in Dart Mining NL's (ASX:DTM) stock could come as a blow to insiders who purchased AU$970.9k worth of stock at an average buy price of AU$0.019 over the past 12 months. This is not good as insiders invest based on expectations that their money will appreciate over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their original investment is now worth only AU$452.6k.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Dart Mining Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by insider J. Mellon for AU$971k worth of shares, at about AU$0.061 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of AU$0.009. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is encouraging to see an insider paid above the current price for shares, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels. J. Mellon was the only individual insider to buy shares in the last twelve months.

Does Dart Mining Boast High Insider Ownership?
Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Dart Mining insiders own 21% of the company, worth about AU$1.1m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Dart Mining Tell Us?
It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. Given that insiders also own a fair bit of Dart Mining we think they are probably pretty confident of a bright future.
