Brickworks (ASX:BKW) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To A$0.42

Brickworks Limited (ASX:BKW) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 22nd of November to A$0.42. Based on this payment, the dividend yield for the company will be 2.5%, which is fairly typical for the industry.

Brickworks' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Based on the last payment, Brickworks was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to fall by 36.8%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could be 40%, which we consider to be quite comfortable, with most of the company's earnings left over to grow the business in the future.

Brickworks Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from A$0.405 total annually to A$0.65. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 4.8% per annum over that time. While the consistency in the dividend payments is impressive, we think the relatively slow rate of growth is less attractive.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Brickworks has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 17% per annum. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for Brickworks' prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.

Our Thoughts On Brickworks' Dividend

Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Brickworks will make a great income stock. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Just as an example, we've come across 3 warning signs for Brickworks you should be aware of, and 1 of them is potentially serious.
