Companies Like INOVIQ (ASX:IIQ) Are In A Position To Invest In Growth
Even when a business is losing money, it's possible for shareholders to make money if they buy a good business at the right price. For example, biotech and mining exploration companies often lose money for years before finding success with a new treatment or mineral discovery. But while the successes are well known, investors should not ignore the very many unprofitable companies that simply burn through all their cash and collapse.
So should INOVIQ (ASX:IIQ) shareholders be worried about its cash burn? In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

How Long Is INOVIQ's Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When INOVIQ last reported its balance sheet in June 2022, it had zero debt and cash worth AU$15m. Importantly, its cash burn was AU$6.5m over the trailing twelve months. Therefore, from June 2022 it had 2.4 years of cash runway. Arguably, that's a prudent and sensible length of runway to have. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.
How Is INOVIQ's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Whilst it's great to see that INOVIQ has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced AU$1.6m, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. As a result, we think it's a bit early to focus on the revenue growth, so we'll limit ourselves to looking at how the cash burn is changing over time. Over the last year its cash burn actually increased by 7.1%, which suggests that management are increasing investment in future growth, but not too quickly. However, the company's true cash runway will therefore be shorter than suggested above, if spending continues to increase. Of course, we've only taken a quick look at the stock's growth metrics, here. You can take a look at how INOVIQ is growing revenue over time by checking this visualization of past revenue growth.
How Hard Would It Be For INOVIQ To Raise More Cash For Growth?
While its cash burn is only increasing slightly, INOVIQ shareholders should still consider the potential need for further cash, down the track. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. One of the main advantages held by publicly listed companies is that they can sell shares to investors to raise cash and fund growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
INOVIQ's cash burn of AU$6.5m is about 12% of its AU$53m market capitalisation. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
Is INOVIQ's Cash Burn A Worry?
On this analysis of INOVIQ's cash burn, we think its cash runway was reassuring, while its increasing cash burn has us a bit worried. Based on the factors mentioned in this article, we think its cash burn situation warrants some attention from shareholders, but we don't think they should be worried. On another note, INOVIQ has 3 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
