Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.
Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Reece (ASX:REH). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Reece Growing?
Generally, companies experiencing growth in earnings per share (EPS) should see similar trends in share price. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Over the last three years, Reece has grown EPS by 14% per year. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. EBIT margins for Reece remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 3.0% to AU$9.1b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are Reece Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Insider interest in a company always sparks a bit of intrigue and many investors are on the lookout for companies where insiders are putting their money where their mouth is. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
It's pleasing to note that insiders spent AU$19m buying Reece shares, over the last year, without reporting any share sales whatsoever. Buying like that is a fantastic look for the company and should rouse the market in anticipation for the future. It is also worth noting that it was Executive Director Leslie Wilson who made the biggest single purchase, worth AU$19m, paying AU$18.83 per share.
On top of the insider buying, it's good to see that Reece insiders have a valuable investment in the business. Notably, they have an enviable stake in the company, worth AU$2.2b. This suggests that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!
Should You Add Reece To Your Watchlist?
One positive for Reece is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. In addition, insiders have been busy adding to their sizeable holdings in the company. That should do plenty in prompting budding investors to undertake a bit more research - or even adding the company to their watchlists.
