Stock Analysis

Is Now The Time To Put Resource Development Group (ASX:RDG) On Your Watchlist?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Resource Development Group (ASX:RDG). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Resource Development Group's Improving Profits

Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So EPS growth can certainly encourage an investor to take note of a stock. It is therefore awe-striking that Resource Development Group's EPS went from AU$0.000033 to AU$0.00047 in just one year. Even though that growth rate is unlikely to be repeated, that looks like a breakout improvement. But the key is discerning whether something profound has changed, or if this is a just a one-off boost.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Resource Development Group is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.8 percentage points to 3.0%, over the last year. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Resource Development Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

We haven't seen any insiders selling Resource Development Group shares, in the last year. With that in mind, it's heartening that Andrew Ellison, the MD & Director of the company, paid AU$50k for shares at around AU$0.04 each.

Is Resource Development Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Resource Development Group's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. If you're like me, you'll find it hard to ignore that sort of explosive EPS growth. And in fact, it could well signal a fundamental shift in the business economics. If that's the case, you may regret neglecting to put Resource Development Group on your watchlist. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 3 warning signs for Resource Development Group that you should be aware of.
