Telekom Austria (VIE:TKA) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at Telekom Austria (VIE:TKA) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Telekom Austria, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = €742m ÷ (€8.3b - €2.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2021).
Therefore, Telekom Austria has an ROCE of 14%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Telecom industry average of 8.7% it's much better.

What Can We Tell From Telekom Austria's ROCE Trend?
Telekom Austria's ROCE growth is quite impressive. The figures show that over the last five years, ROCE has grown 41% whilst employing roughly the same amount of capital. So our take on this is that the business has increased efficiencies to generate these higher returns, all the while not needing to make any additional investments. On that front, things are looking good so it's worth exploring what management has said about growth plans going forward.
The Bottom Line
As discussed above, Telekom Austria appears to be getting more proficient at generating returns since capital employed has remained flat but earnings (before interest and tax) are up. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 74% return over the last five years. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
