MMTC's(NSE:MMTC) Share Price Is Down 56% Over The Past Three Years.

Investing in stocks inevitably means buying into some companies that perform poorly. Long term MMTC Limited (NSE:MMTC) shareholders know that all too well, since the share price is down considerably over three years. Regrettably, they have had to cope with a 56% drop in the share price over that period. Even worse, it's down 17% in about a month, which isn't fun at all. Importantly, this could be a market reaction to the recently released financial results. You can check out the latest numbers in our company report.

Because MMTC made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between MMTC's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for MMTC shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 55%, over the last 3 years, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Investors in MMTC had a tough year, with a total loss of 7.4% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 0.2%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 6.7% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - MMTC has 3 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.

Of course MMTC may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of growth stocks.

Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced. A business at three times leverage with nothing due until 2031 is in a completely different position from the same ratio rolling next year. Screen on weighted average maturity and the schedule behind it.
