Introducing 3M (NYSE:MMM), A Stock That Climbed 12% In The Last Five Years

When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) share price is up 12% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Unfortunately the share price is down 4.2% in the last year.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over half a decade, 3M managed to grow its earnings per share at 2.9% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 2.2% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on 3M's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of 3M, it has a TSR of 28% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

Investors in 3M had a tough year, with a total loss of 1.0% (including dividends) , against a market gain of about 28%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 5.0% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand 3M better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - 3M has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

I won't rely solely on Retail Sales. It only tell you what was spent. Credit data is the one that tells you how. For me the latter is more important than the former.
