If you want to know who really controls Pacific Online Limited (HKG:543), then you'll have to look at the makeup of its share registry. Large companies usually have institutions as shareholders, and we usually see insiders owning shares in smaller companies. I quite like to see at least a little bit of insider ownership. As Charlie Munger said 'Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome.

Pacific Online is not a large company by global standards. It has a market capitalization of HK$1.3b, which means it wouldn't have the attention of many institutional investors. What Does The Lack Of Institutional Ownership Tell Us About Pacific Online?

Small companies that are not very actively traded often lack institutional investors, but it's less common to see large companies without them.

There are many reasons why a company might not have any institutions on the share registry. It may be hard for institutions to buy large amounts of shares, if liquidity (the amount of shares traded each day) is low. If the company has not needed to raise capital, institutions might lack the opportunity to build a position. On the other hand, it's always possible that professional investors are avoiding a company because they don't think it's the best place for their money. Pacific Online's earnings and revenue track record (below) may not be compelling to institutional investors -- or they simply might not have looked at the business closely.

Ko Chiang Wang is the second largest shareholder owning 26% of common stock, and Treasure Field Holdings Ltd. holds about 8.8% of the company stock.

After doing some more digging, we found that the top 2 shareholders collectively control more than half of the company's shares, implying that they have considerable power to influence the company's decisions.

While studying institutional ownership for a company can add value to your research, it is also a good practice to research analyst recommendations to get a deeper understand of a stock's expected performance. Insider Ownership Of Pacific Online

The definition of company insiders can be subjective, and does vary between jurisdictions. Our data reflects individual insiders, capturing board members at the very least. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.

Our information suggests that insiders own more than half of Pacific Online Limited. This gives them effective control of the company. That means they own HK$736m worth of shares in the HK$1.3b company. That's quite meaningful. Most would argue this is a positive, showing strong alignment with shareholders. Private Company Ownership

Our data indicates that Private Companies hold 8.8%, of the company's shares. It's hard to draw any conclusions from this fact alone, so its worth looking into who owns those private companies. Sometimes insiders or other related parties have an interest in shares in a public company through a separate private company.
