Did You Miss TELUS's (TSE:T) 11% Share Price Gain?

TELUS Corporation (TSE:T) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 14% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been respectable. After all, the stock has performed better than the market (10%) in that time, and is up 11%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, TELUS managed to grow its earnings per share at 4.6% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 2.1% over the same period. Therefore, it seems the market has become relatively pessimistic about the company.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, TELUS's TSR for the last 5 years was 39%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that TELUS shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 3.7% over one year. That's including the dividend. However, that falls short of the 6.7% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that TELUS is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
