Amadeus IT Group (BME:AMS) Share Prices Have Dropped 28% In The Last Year

It is a pleasure to report that the Amadeus IT Group, S.A. (BME:AMS) is up 31% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last year have been less than pleasing. In fact the stock is down 28% in the last year, well below the market return.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unfortunately Amadeus IT Group reported an EPS drop of 69% for the last year. This fall in the EPS is significantly worse than the 28% the share price fall. It may have been that the weak EPS was not as bad as some had feared. With a P/E ratio of 66.04, it's fair to say the market sees an EPS rebound on the cards.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Amadeus IT Group's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Amadeus IT Group shareholders, and that cash payout explains why its total shareholder loss of 28%, over the last year, isn't as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 12% in the twelve months, Amadeus IT Group shareholders did even worse, losing 28%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 6.3% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 4 warning signs we've spotted with Amadeus IT Group .
