Nictus Limited (JSE:NCS) Surges 52% Yet Its Low P/E Is No Reason For Excitement
The Nictus Limited (JSE:NCS) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 52%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 33%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Nictus may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 6.1x, since almost half of all companies in South Africa have P/E ratios greater than 11x and even P/E's higher than 16x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Nictus has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Nictus, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Nictus' to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 66%. The latest three year period has also seen a 14% overall rise in EPS, aided extensively by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 19% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's understandable that Nictus' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Key Takeaway
Despite Nictus' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of Nictus revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its low P/E, given they look worse than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
