Insiders were net sellers of Sanlam Limited's (JSE:SLM ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Sanlam Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Non Executive Director, Johan van Zyl, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for R69m worth of shares at a price of R69.16 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of R79.27, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was 100% of Johan van Zyl's stake. Johan van Zyl was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership Of Sanlam
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Sanlam insiders own about R559m worth of shares. That equates to 0.3% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
What Might The Insider Transactions At Sanlam Tell Us?
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. It's heartening that insiders own plenty of stock, but we'd like to see more insider buying, since the last year of Sanlam insider transactions don't fill us with confidence. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
