Clicks Group (JSE:CLS) Is Increasing Its Dividend To ZAR6.48
Clicks Group Limited (JSE:CLS) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 26th of January to ZAR6.48. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 2.4%.
Clicks Group's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Based on the last payment, Clicks Group was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 36.9% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 53% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Clicks Group Has A Solid Track Record
The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ZAR1.90 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ZAR8.86. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 17% per annum over that time. We can see that payments have shown some very nice upward momentum without faltering, which provides some reassurance that future payments will also be reliable.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. It's encouraging to see that Clicks Group has been growing its earnings per share at 12% a year over the past five years. Earnings are on the uptrend, and it is only paying a small portion of those earnings to shareholders.
Clicks Group Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Clicks Group is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
