Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Vistra Corp.'s (NYSE:VST) 32% Share Price Surge

Despite an already strong run, Vistra Corp. (NYSE:VST) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 32% in the last thirty days. The last 30 days were the cherry on top of the stock's 365% gain in the last year, which is nothing short of spectacular.

After such a large jump in price, Vistra may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 34.1x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios under 19x and even P/E's lower than 11x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times have been advantageous for Vistra as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Vistra?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Vistra's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 57%. Although, its longer-term performance hasn't been as strong with three-year EPS growth being relatively non-existent overall. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 22% per annum during the coming three years according to the eleven analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's understandable that Vistra's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Vistra's P/E?

Shares in Vistra have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Vistra's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
