NextEra Energy (NEE) Stock Looks Above Fair Value As Shares Rose 34%

NextEra Energy's share price has gained 34.2% over the past three years, yet current valuation checks send mixed signals, with the Dividend Discount Model (DDM) implying the stock trades at a premium to its intrinsic value while market multiples still screen it as undervalued.

  • Over the past three years, NextEra Energy has returned 34.2%, which puts extra focus on whether recent gains already reflect its long term prospects.
  • The planned Paducah American Energy Hub and the proposed Dominion Energy acquisition may support expectations for future cash flows, while political and regulatory scrutiny around the Dominion deal is a key risk that could affect how investors price the stock.
  • NextEra Energy scores 3 out of 6 on Simply Wall St's valuation checks, which points to a mixed picture rather than a clear bargain or clear overvaluation for investors reviewing the 3 out of 6 score.

The issue now is whether the current US$84.65 share price already builds in the growth NextEra Energy may achieve, or if the gap between the intrinsic value estimate and market multiples still leaves room for upside.

Has NextEra Energy Run Too Far on Dividends?

The Dividend Discount Model (DDM) values NextEra Energy by projecting future dividends and discounting them back to today. The model uses a current dividend per share of about $2.70, a return on equity near 9.9% and a payout ratio close to 59%. Long term dividend growth is capped at 3.7%, slightly below the 4.0% growth that the inputs would otherwise imply. This keeps the assumptions more conservative for a mature utility group that already returns a meaningful share of earnings to investors.

Using these inputs, the DDM points to an intrinsic value of about $76 per share, which sits below the current $84.65 share price. Because the proposed $67 billion Dominion Energy acquisition introduces political and regulatory risk, the current premium to the DDM estimate may partly reflect confidence that the deal and projects like the Paducah American Energy Hub will support long term dividend growth.

Overall, the Dividend Discount Model suggests NextEra Energy stock currently screens as overvalued relative to its implied dividend stream.

Our Dividend Discount Model (DDM) analysis suggests NextEra Energy may be overvalued by 10.9%. Discover 51 high quality undervalued stocks or create your own screener to find better value opportunities.

Does NextEra Energy Look Undervalued on Earnings?

P/E suits NextEra Energy because earnings remain a key anchor for regulated utilities that pay consistent dividends. On this measure, the stock trades at about 19.0x earnings, which sits below the Electric Utilities industry average of roughly 20.8x and also below the peer group average of about 22.8x.

The tailored fair P/E ratio for NextEra Energy is 25.8x, which reflects what investors might typically pay given its size, sector and risk profile. The gap between this fair ratio and the current 19.0x suggests the market is applying a discount despite projects like the Paducah American Energy Hub and the proposed Dominion Energy acquisition shaping expectations for future earnings power.

On the P/E multiple, NextEra Energy stock currently appears inexpensive compared with where it might trade based on its earnings profile and sector benchmarks.

The NextEra Energy Narrative: What Would Justify Today's Price?

They spell out which combinations of growth, margins and earnings would need to hold for the stock to be worth materially more or less than today's price. These Narratives are available on the company's Community page.

The Bottom Line

For NextEra Energy, the Dividend Discount Model (DDM) points to shares that look overvalued on intrinsic value, while the P/E multiple suggests the stock trades at a discount to where similar utilities are priced. That gap is largely about timing and certainty of cash flows versus how much growth and re rating investors are willing to assume. The broader checks sit in the middle, so neither signal looks decisive on its own. The key question now is whether projects like the Paducah American Energy Hub and the proposed Dominion Energy deal ultimately justify a richer earnings multiple rather than proving to be a value trap.
