Montauk Renewables (NASDAQ:MNTK) Is Looking To Continue Growing Its Returns On Capital
Finding a business that has the potential to grow substantially is not easy, but it is possible if we look at a few key financial metrics. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at Montauk Renewables (NASDAQ:MNTK) so let's look a bit deeper.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Montauk Renewables is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.14 = US$39m ÷ (US$314m - US$32m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Thus, Montauk Renewables has an ROCE of 14%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 3.1% generated by the Renewable Energy industry.

In Conclusion...
To sum it up, Montauk Renewables has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. And investors seem to expect more of this going forward, since the stock has rewarded shareholders with a 84% return over the last year. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
