Would Shareholders Who Purchased Copa Holdings' (NYSE:CPA) Stock Three Years Be Happy With The Share price Today?
Copa Holdings, S.A. (NYSE:CPA) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 22% in the last month. Meanwhile over the last three years the stock has dropped hard. Regrettably, the share price slid 55% in that period. Some might say the recent bounce is to be expected after such a bad drop. While many would remain nervous, there could be further gains if the business can put its best foot forward.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over the three years that the share price declined, Copa Holdings' earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. But it's safe to say we'd generally expect the share price to be lower as a result!

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Copa Holdings' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Copa Holdings' TSR, which was a 51% drop over the last 3 years, was not as bad as the share price return.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 16% in the last year, Copa Holdings shareholders lost 37%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 11% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Copa Holdings , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
