Investors Will Want Daseke's (NASDAQ:DSKE) Growth In ROCE To Persist
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at Daseke (NASDAQ:DSKE) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Daseke:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.09 = US$86m ÷ (US$1.2b - US$248m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2023).
Therefore, Daseke has an ROCE of 9.0%. Ultimately, that's a low return and it under-performs the Transportation industry average of 14%.

What Can We Tell From Daseke's ROCE Trend?
Daseke's ROCE growth is quite impressive. More specifically, while the company has kept capital employed relatively flat over the last five years, the ROCE has climbed 439% in that same time. Basically the business is generating higher returns from the same amount of capital and that is proof that there are improvements in the company's efficiencies. It's worth looking deeper into this though because while it's great that the business is more efficient, it might also mean that going forward the areas to invest internally for the organic growth are lacking.
For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. The current liabilities has increased to 21% of total assets, so the business is now more funded by the likes of its suppliers or short-term creditors. Keep an eye out for future increases because when the ratio of current liabilities to total assets gets particularly high, this can introduce some new risks for the business.
The Bottom Line
To bring it all together, Daseke has done well to increase the returns it's generating from its capital employed. And since the stock has fallen 34% over the last five years, there might be an opportunity here. With that in mind, we believe the promising trends warrant this stock for further investigation.
