SurgePays, Inc. (NASDAQ:SURG) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 29%
Those holding SurgePays, Inc. (NASDAQ:SURG) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 29% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 62% share price drop in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, considering around half the companies operating in the United States' Wireless Telecom industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.8x, you may still consider SurgePays as an solid investment opportunity with its 0.3x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How SurgePays Has Been Performing
SurgePays hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, SurgePays would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 21%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 143% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest revenue growth is heading into negative territory, declining 39% over the next year. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 4.4%, which paints a poor picture.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that SurgePays' P/S is closely matching its industry peers. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Bottom Line On SurgePays' P/S
SurgePays' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
It's clear to see that SurgePays maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast for sliding revenue, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless there's material change, it's hard to envision a situation where the stock price will rise drastically.
