Gogo Inc. (NASDAQ:GOGO) Stock Rockets 34% As Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected
Gogo Inc. (NASDAQ:GOGO) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 34% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 15% in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Gogo's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 19.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in the United States, where the median P/E ratio is around 18x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Gogo's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn around. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Gogo's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 64%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in EPS being achieved in total. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 5.8% as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 15%, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's curious that Gogo's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On Gogo's P/E
Gogo appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump getting its P/E back in line with most other companies. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Gogo currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
