Shareholders in Bandwidth (NASDAQ:BAND) have lost 80%, as stock drops 11% this past week
We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. Spare a thought for those who held Bandwidth Inc. (NASDAQ:BAND) for five whole years - as the share price tanked 80%. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 27% over the last twelve months. Furthermore, it's down 21% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.
If the past week is anything to go by, investor sentiment for Bandwidth isn't positive, so let's see if there's a mismatch between fundamentals and the share price.
Bandwidth wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
Over five years, Bandwidth grew its revenue at 19% per year. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. So on the face of it we're really surprised to see the share price has averaged a fall of 13% each year, in the same time period. It could be that the stock was over-hyped before. We'd recommend carefully checking for indications of future growth - and balance sheet threats - before considering a purchase.

A Different Perspective
Bandwidth shareholders are down 27% for the year, but the market itself is up 7.2%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 13% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Bandwidth better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - Bandwidth has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
