ATN International Might Find It Hard To Continue The Dividend
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. Even though ATN International is not generating a profit, it is still paying a dividend. The company is also yet to generate cash flow, so the dividend sustainability is definitely questionable.
Analysts expect the EPS to grow by 92.7% over the next 12 months. This is the right direction to be moving, but it is not enough to achieve profitability. Unless this can be done in short order, the dividend might be difficult to sustain.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2012, the first annual payment was US$0.92, compared to the most recent full-year payment of US$0.68. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 3.0% per year. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Over the past five years, it looks as though ATN International's EPS has declined at around 58% a year. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. However, the next year is actually looking up, with earnings set to rise. We would just wait until it becomes a pattern before getting too excited.
We're Not Big Fans Of ATN International's Dividend
In summary, while it is good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we think that at current levels the payment isn't particularly sustainable. The company isn't making enough to be paying as much as it is, and the other factors don't look particularly promising either. The dividend doesn't inspire confidence that it will provide solid income in the future.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
