SmartRent, Inc.'s (NYSE:SMRT) stock price has dropped 10% in the previous week, but insiders who sold US$294k in stock over the past year have had less luck. The average selling price of US$3.27 is still lower than the current share price, or in other words, insiders would have been better off holding on to their shares.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

SmartRent Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Co-Founder & CTO, Isaiah Derose-Wilson, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$220k worth of shares at a price of US$3.50 each. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$2.50. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Insider Ownership Of SmartRent

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 12% of SmartRent shares, worth about US$59m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

What Might The Insider Transactions At SmartRent Tell Us?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. Still, the insider transactions at SmartRent in the last 12 months are not very heartening. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink.
