Despite shrinking by US$54m in the past week, Harmonic (NASDAQ:HLIT) shareholders are still up 60% over 5 years
Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ:HLIT) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 19% in the last quarter. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. Unfortunately its return of 60% is below the market return of 102%.
In light of the stock dropping 4.3% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last half decade, Harmonic became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. We can see that the Harmonic share price is up 9.6% in the last three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 37% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 3.1% average annual increase in the share price over the same three years. So you might conclude the market is a little more cautious about the stock, these days.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. Before buying or selling a stock, we always recommend a close examination of historic growth trends, available here..
A Different Perspective
Harmonic shareholders are down 21% for the year, but the market itself is up 19%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 10%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Harmonic better, we need to consider many other factors. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Harmonic .
