Coda Octopus Group (NASDAQ:CODA) sheds 10% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
It hasn't been the best quarter for Coda Octopus Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:CODA) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 17% in that time. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. To be precise, the stock price is 346% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 10%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Coda Octopus Group achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 9.0% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 35% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
We know that Coda Octopus Group has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Coda Octopus Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 29% over the last year. However, that falls short of the 35% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
