We Think ClearSign Technologies (NASDAQ:CLIR) Can Afford To Drive Business Growth
We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, although Amazon.com made losses for many years after listing, if you had bought and held the shares since 1999, you would have made a fortune. But while history lauds those rare successes, those that fail are often forgotten; who remembers Pets.com?
So, the natural question for ClearSign Technologies (NASDAQ:CLIR) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

SWOT Analysis for ClearSign Technologies
- Currently debt free.
- Shareholders have been diluted in the past year.
- CLIR's financial characteristics indicate limited near-term opportunities for shareholders.
- Has less than 3 years of cash runway based on current free cash flow.
How Long Is ClearSign Technologies' Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is calculated by dividing its cash hoard by its cash burn. As at December 2022, ClearSign Technologies had cash of US$9.1m and no debt. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through US$5.2m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 21 months from December 2022. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.
How Is ClearSign Technologies' Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
Whilst it's great to see that ClearSign Technologies has already begun generating revenue from operations, last year it only produced US$374k, so we don't think it is generating significant revenue, at this point. Therefore, for the purposes of this analysis we'll focus on how the cash burn is tracking. While it hardly paints a picture of imminent growth, the fact that it has reduced its cash burn by 25% over the last year suggests some degree of prudence. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.
How Easily Can ClearSign Technologies Raise Cash?
While ClearSign Technologies is showing a solid reduction in its cash burn, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).
ClearSign Technologies' cash burn of US$5.2m is about 15% of its US$34m market capitalisation. Given that situation, it's fair to say the company wouldn't have much trouble raising more cash for growth, but shareholders would be somewhat diluted.
Is ClearSign Technologies' Cash Burn A Worry?
ClearSign Technologies appears to be in pretty good health when it comes to its cash burn situation. Not only was its cash burn reduction quite good, but its cash runway was a real positive. Cash burning companies are always on the riskier side of things, but after considering all of the factors discussed in this short piece, we're not too worried about its rate of cash burn. On another note, ClearSign Technologies has 3 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
