The total return for Avid Technology (NASDAQ:AVID) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
It hasn't been the best quarter for Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVID) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 10% in that time. But that does not change the realty that the stock's performance has been terrific, over five years. To be precise, the stock price is 422% higher than it was five years ago, a wonderful performance by any measure. So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain. While the long term returns are impressive, we do have some sympathy for those who bought more recently, given the 20% drop, in the last year.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the five years of share price growth, Avid Technology moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

We know that Avid Technology has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.
A Different Perspective
While it's certainly disappointing to see that Avid Technology shares lost 20% throughout the year, that wasn't as bad as the market loss of 44%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 39%, each year, over five years. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
