It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the WEX Inc. (NYSE:WEX) share price down 15% in the last month. But at least the stock is up over the last three years. In that time, it is up 56%, which isn't bad, but not amazing either.

Although WEX has shed US$977m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During three years of share price growth, WEX achieved compound earnings per share growth of 27% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 16% average annual increase in the share price. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that WEX shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 7.1% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 1.4% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
