Subdued Growth No Barrier To Twilio Inc. (NYSE:TWLO) With Shares Advancing 32%

Twilio Inc. (NYSE:TWLO) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 32% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 56% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, when almost half of the companies in the United States' IT industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.6x, you may consider Twilio as a stock probably not worth researching with its 4.2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has Twilio Performed Recently?

Twilio could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It might be that many expect the uninspiring revenue performance to recover significantly, which has kept the P/S ratio from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Keen to find out how analysts think Twilio's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Twilio's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 13% gain to the company's revenues. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 34% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 7.7% each year during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 21% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

With this in consideration, we believe it doesn't make sense that Twilio's P/S is outpacing its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

What We Can Learn From Twilio's P/S?

Twilio shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Despite analysts forecasting some poorer-than-industry revenue growth figures for Twilio, this doesn't appear to be impacting the P/S in the slightest. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. At these price levels, investors should remain cautious, particularly if things don't improve.
