Not Many Are Piling Into Tuya Inc. (NYSE:TUYA) Stock Yet As It Plummets 26%
Tuya Inc. (NYSE:TUYA) shares have had a horrible month, losing 26% after a relatively good period beforehand. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 36% share price drop.
In spite of the heavy fall in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Tuya's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.4x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Software industry in the United States, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Tuya's Recent Performance Look Like?
Tuya hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It might be that many expect the dour revenue performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/S from falling. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Tuya's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 11%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 40% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 20% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 15%, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Tuya is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
What Does Tuya's P/S Mean For Investors?
Tuya's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, Tuya's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
