UiPath Inc.'s (NYSE:PATH) 28% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues
The UiPath Inc. (NYSE:PATH) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 28%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think UiPath's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 5.7x is worth a mention when the median P/S in the United States' Software industry is similar at about 5x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has UiPath Performed Recently?
UiPath could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to lift, which has kept the P/S from declining. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.
Keen to find out how analysts think UiPath's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like UiPath's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 10% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 49% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 9.7% as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 22% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it interesting that UiPath is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Key Takeaway
UiPath appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump bringing its P/S back in line with other companies in the industry It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
When you consider that UiPath's revenue growth estimates are fairly muted compared to the broader industry, it's easy to see why we consider it unexpected to be trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Circumstances like this present a risk to current and prospective investors who may see share prices fall if the low revenue growth impacts the sentiment.
There are also other vital risk factors to consider and we've discovered 2 warning signs for UiPath (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
