Companies Like Telos (NASDAQ:TLS) Can Afford To Invest In Growth

We can readily understand why investors are attracted to unprofitable companies. For example, Telos (NASDAQ:TLS) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 110%. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

Given its strong share price performance, we think it's worthwhile for Telos shareholders to consider whether its cash burn is concerning. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. The first step is to compare its cash burn with its cash reserves, to give us its 'cash runway'.

When Might Telos Run Out Of Money?

You can calculate a company's cash runway by dividing the amount of cash it has by the rate at which it is spending that cash. When Telos last reported its June 2025 balance sheet in August 2025, it had zero debt and cash worth US$57m. Importantly, its cash burn was US$16m over the trailing twelve months. Therefore, from June 2025 it had 3.5 years of cash runway. Importantly, though, analysts think that Telos will reach cashflow breakeven before then. If that happens, then the length of its cash runway, today, would become a moot point. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Well Is Telos Growing?

Over the last year, Telos maintained its cash burn at a fairly steady level. Unfortunately, however, operating revenue actually dropped 14%, which is a worry. Considering both these factors, we're not particularly excited by its growth profile. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. So you might want to take a peek at how much the company is expected to grow in the next few years.

Can Telos Raise More Cash Easily?

While Telos seems to be in a fairly good position, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations.

Telos has a market capitalisation of US$496m and burnt through US$16m last year, which is 3.3% of the company's market value. That's a low proportion, so we figure the company would be able to raise more cash to fund growth, with a little dilution, or even to simply borrow some money.

How Risky Is Telos' Cash Burn Situation?

As you can probably tell by now, we're not too worried about Telos' cash burn. In particular, we think its cash runway stands out as evidence that the company is well on top of its spending. While its falling revenue wasn't great, the other factors mentioned in this article more than make up for weakness on that measure. It's clearly very positive to see that analysts are forecasting the company will break even fairly soon. Taking all the factors in this report into account, we're not at all worried about its cash burn, as the business appears well capitalized to spend as needs be. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 3 warning signs for Telos (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
