A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Telos Corporation's (NASDAQ:TLS) 31% Share Price Climb

Telos Corporation (NASDAQ:TLS) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 31% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 49% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Telos' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.4x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 5.2x and even P/S above 13x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Telos Performed Recently?

Telos hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

How Is Telos' Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Telos would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 24% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 33% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 21% per year during the coming three years according to the six analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 20% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Telos' P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What Does Telos' P/S Mean For Investors?

Telos' recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've seen that Telos currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its forecast growth is in line with the wider industry. Despite average revenue growth estimates, there could be some unobserved threats keeping the P/S low. Perhaps investors are concerned that the company could underperform against the forecasts over the near term.
