Stronghold Digital Mining, Inc. (NASDAQ:SDIG) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 99%
Stronghold Digital Mining, Inc. (NASDAQ:SDIG) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 99% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 78% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Even after such a large jump in price, Stronghold Digital Mining may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.4x and even P/S higher than 10x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Stronghold Digital Mining Has Been Performing
Recent times have been advantageous for Stronghold Digital Mining as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Stronghold Digital Mining's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 243%. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, thanks in part to the last 12 months of revenue growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to slump, contracting by 12% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 13%.
With this information, we are not surprised that Stronghold Digital Mining is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
What We Can Learn From Stronghold Digital Mining's P/S?
Stronghold Digital Mining's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Stronghold Digital Mining's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
