Roper Technologies Insiders Sell US$3.1m Of Stock, Possibly Signalling Caution

In the last year, many Roper Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:ROP) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Roper Technologies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Independent Director, Richard Wallman, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.3m worth of shares at a price of US$550 each. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$547. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. In this case, the big sale took place at around the current price, so it's not too bad (but it's still not a positive).

In the last year Roper Technologies insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insiders At Roper Technologies Have Sold Stock Recently

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of Roper Technologies shares. In total, insider Christopher Wright dumped US$200k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.

Does Roper Technologies Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Roper Technologies insiders own about US$207m worth of shares (which is 0.4% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Do The Roper Technologies Insider Transactions Indicate?

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. On the plus side, Roper Technologies makes money, and is growing profits. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious.
