Porch Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRCH) Shares Fly 31% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth
Porch Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRCH) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 31% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 54% in the last year.
Even after such a large jump in price, Porch Group's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.6x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Software industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4.7x and even P/S above 10x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Porch Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Porch Group has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.
Keen to find out how analysts think Porch Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Porch Group's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 128% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its uninspiring short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been great for the company, but investors will want to ask why it has slowed to such an extent.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 8.9% as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 18% growth, that's a disappointing outcome.
With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Porch Group's P/S is closely matching its industry peers. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.
The Key Takeaway
Porch Group's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Porch Group's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Porch Group's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
