Further weakness as Marin Software (NASDAQ:MRIN) drops 12% this week, taking five-year losses to 80%
We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. Imagine if you held Marin Software Incorporated (NASDAQ:MRIN) for half a decade as the share price tanked 80%. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 58% in the last three months. We really hope anyone holding through that price crash has a diversified portfolio. Even when you lose money, you don't have to lose the lesson.
After losing 12% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Marin Software isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.
In the last five years Marin Software saw its revenue shrink by 27% per year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it's not altogether surprising to see the share price down 13% per year in the same time period. This kind of price performance makes us very wary, especially when combined with falling revenue. Ironically, that behavior could create an opportunity for the contrarian investor - but only if there are good reasons to predict a brighter future.

A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Marin Software has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 68% in the last twelve months. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 13% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance.
