Kaltura, Inc. (NASDAQ:KLTR) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 34% share price drop in the last month. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 53% share price decline.

Following the heavy fall in price, Kaltura may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.7x, since almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 4.3x and even P/S higher than 11x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has Kaltura Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Kaltura has been relatively sluggish. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Kaltura?

Kaltura's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 3.7% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 34% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 0.2% during the coming year according to the seven analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 14%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why Kaltura's P/S is falling short industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Final Word

Having almost fallen off a cliff, Kaltura's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of Kaltura's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
