Kaltura, Inc. (NASDAQ:KLTR) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 33%
The Kaltura, Inc. (NASDAQ:KLTR) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 33%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 72% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Kaltura may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Software industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 5.8x and even P/S higher than 13x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Kaltura Performed Recently?
Recent times haven't been great for Kaltura as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. Perhaps the market is expecting the current trend of poor revenue growth to continue, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Kaltura's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered virtually the same number to the company's top line as the year before. Regardless, revenue has managed to lift by a handy 13% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 1.2% over the next year. With the industry predicted to deliver 25% growth, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
With this in consideration, its clear as to why Kaltura's P/S is falling short industry peers. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
What We Can Learn From Kaltura's P/S?
Shares in Kaltura have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Kaltura maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
