Even With A 52% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Iris Energy Limited's (NASDAQ:IREN) Performance Completely

Iris Energy Limited (NASDAQ:IREN) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 52% gain in the last month alone. But the last month did very little to improve the 60% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Iris Energy's P/S ratio of 4.3x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Software industry in the United States is also close to 4.4x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Iris Energy's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Iris Energy has been doing relatively well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Iris Energy's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Iris Energy's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 60%. This great performance means it was also able to deliver immense revenue growth over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 101% during the coming year according to the seven analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 13%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Iris Energy is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Iris Energy's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Despite enticing revenue growth figures that outpace the industry, Iris Energy's P/S isn't quite what we'd expect. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Iris Energy (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
