Is It Too Late To Consider InterDigital (IDCC) After 73% Surge And Licensing Headlines?

  • If you are looking at InterDigital and wondering whether the recent share price really reflects its underlying worth, you are not alone.
  • The stock last closed at US$358.50, with a 1 year return of 72.7% and a 3 year return that is more than 4x, even after a 4.4% pullback over the past week and an 8.5% gain across the last 30 days.
  • Recent news coverage has focused on InterDigital’s role in wireless and video technology licensing and its activity in intellectual property agreements. This helps explain why the stock has been on investors’ radar. These headlines give useful context for the strong multi year share price performance and the more mixed shorter term moves.
  • Right now, our valuation model scores InterDigital at 3 out of 6 on undervaluation checks. Next we will look at how traditional valuation methods stack up, before finishing with a different way to think about what the market might be missing.

Approach 1: InterDigital Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Analysis

A Discounted Cash Flow, or DCF, model estimates what a company could be worth today by projecting its future cash flows and then discounting those back to a present value.

For InterDigital, the model used here is a 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity approach, based on cash flow projections in US$. The latest twelve month free cash flow is about $478.5 million. Analysts provide explicit free cash flow estimates out to 2027, including $357.7 million for 2026 and $308.2 million for 2027. Beyond that, Simply Wall St extrapolates cash flows out to 2035, with a projected free cash flow of $276.2 million in ten years.

Bringing all those projected cash flows back to today gives an estimated intrinsic value of $168.39 per share under this DCF model. Compared with the recent share price of $358.50, the model suggests InterDigital is 112.9% overvalued on this basis.

Approach 2: InterDigital Price vs Earnings (P/E)

For profitable companies like InterDigital, the P/E ratio is a useful shorthand for how much investors are paying for each dollar of earnings, which makes it a practical way to compare valuation across similar businesses.

What counts as a “normal” P/E depends on how the market views a company’s growth potential and risk. Higher expected growth or lower perceived risk can support a higher P/E, while lower growth or higher risk usually calls for a lower P/E.

InterDigital currently trades on a P/E of 22.65x. That sits below the broader Software industry average P/E of about 25.41x, and also below the peer group average of 42.48x. Simply Wall St’s proprietary Fair Ratio for InterDigital is 22.10x, which reflects factors such as its earnings profile, industry, profit margins, market cap and company specific risks.

The Fair Ratio is more tailored than a simple comparison with peers or the industry, because it adjusts for InterDigital’s own characteristics instead of assuming it should trade exactly in line with averages.

With the current P/E of 22.65x only slightly above the Fair Ratio of 22.10x, InterDigital looks priced at about the level this model would expect.

TDOC logo
derek_3wsdg on Teladoc Health ·

You’ve overlooked the activist investor factor. Travis Cocke’s Voss has announced 5% ownership through a 13G filing. They’ve added to that 5% since, and in doing so, have created a structural trap door for 27.42 Million Shares actively sold short. Chuck will announce lots of positives on July 29 but it’s what Voss announces shortly after that will rock the overextended Teledoc shorts. The Walmart partnership is the tip of the iceberg. The market is missing the sheer regulatory and enterprise friction of modern corporate healthcare. Teladoc isn't a "consumer app"; it is the primary digital infrastructure integrated directly into the legacy backends of Tier-1 insurance companies and fortune 500 employers, covering 105 million+ lives. Teladoc is acting as the digital top-of-funnel engine for the world's largest retailer. If Voss pushes the narrative that Teladoc is effectively the outsourced digital brain of Walmart's entire healthcare footprint, the fair value shifts from a basic health multiple to an enterprise distribution premium. Additionally , we are in a structural gold rush for high-quality, legally compliant, longitudinal medical data to train vertical healthcare AI models. Large technology hyperscalers and pharmaceutical giants cannot simply scrape the internet for this; they need structured clinical inputs. Teladoc sits on one of the largest de-identified virtual medical datasets on earth. From the activist playbook , we’ll see Voss demand the immediate creation of a Data & Diagnostics Licensing Division, transforming a legacy liability into an incredibly high-margin, pure-software data asset that requires zero human clinician hours to scale. Chuck is doing great work and deserves credi5 for the Teledoc turnaround but it will be Travis Cocke who will be responsible for a share price way beyond your $15 valuation.
